What is National Bike Month?

April showers bring May flowers, NSYNC memes, and of course, more bike rides. May is National Bike Month, and believe it or not it has more of an official background than other "National (Insert Whatever Food/Trend/Family Member/Promotional Item Here) Months" that we've all come to know and love.

National Bike Month is celebrating its 52nd year in action. The part-celebratory, part-educationally focused month was established by The League of American Bicyclists in 1956, an organization promoting the benefits of cycling since 1880. At Westridge, we're taking National Bike Month by force with some exciting new product launches, giveaways, and more.

To kick things off, we're featuring the oldest and noblest of bicycling traditions: the fixed-gear/single-speed cycle. Single speed and fixed gear bikes used to be the only option for competitive cyclists. Now, this style is used among both serious commuters and casual cyclists alike.

Let's start simple

Sleek, stylish, eye-catching, low-maintenance. No, this isn't a Tinder profile, this is Harper from Critical Cycles. Harper is your go-to for commuting, coasting, and cruising everywhere and anywhere. With a quick switch of the back wheel, Harper turns from single-speed to fixed-gear. Riding fixed has its advantages (including a guaranteed workout), but it's not necessary to ride that way if you don't enjoy it!

This bike is designed for longevity. The hand-built high-tensile strength steel diamond frame is ideal for a commuter's on-the-go lifestyle. Ride further and longer with riser handlebars. This style allows your body to ride in a more natural position, reducing the strain on your shoulders and back.

If handbrakes aren't your jam, Harper also comes in a coaster brake style. Coaster brakes are typically seen on beach cruisers, however with Harper's sleek build and 700c wheels, you can cover a lot more ground at a much faster rate. Coaster brakes are the most straightforward to control. Simply pedal backwards to come to a stop. No levers, no cables, and most importantly - no upkeep.

Classic build, better ride

If you're looking for a simplistic ride with just a few more bells and whistles, the Mantra V2 from Retrospec is the right call. Mantra still boasts the same sleek single-speed look, but it goes a step further. Retrospec fits this beauty with front and rear Promax brakes and machined sidewall rims for a quick and precise response time.

Mantra is lightweight and comes standard with sealed cartridge bearing hubs to keep your bike clean and on the road longer. Dampness, water, grime, and dirt don't stand a chance accessing the most delicate parts of your ride and shortening its life. Plus, just like Harper, Mantra allows you to easily switch from a single-speed to a fixed ride with its flip-flop hub.

Retrospec Mantra V2 Fixed-Gear/Single-Speed Bike - $329.99
